16 October 10 - 22:18Chailey & Newick v Broad Oak Thunder

3rd October 2010, Chailey v Broad Oak and Horam U14's "Thunder" Post Match AnalysisChailey 1 : Broad Oak 4 Gate 2,021 Man of the Match - George It was a game of 4 halves .....!!!! The First Half (first 25 minutes of the game)Having lost the toss, we were left playing right to left and into a strong head wind; Chailey made the most of this and dominated the first 25 minutes of the game with both possession and territory. Broad Oak only managed to get out of their own half when Sam kicked from goal. We did not win any throw-in’s and very few of Sam’s goal kicks. We did have a brief spell in this first of 4 half’s, with 2 consecutive corner kicks, the first with Lewis just sticking it wide to the right of the goal, and the second attempt just floated over the cross bar from a Spencer lob from 10 yards. After 21 minutes the rain started! With around 25 minutes of the first half played, we entered the second half of the match! The Second Half (the last 10 minutes of the first)If the first 25 minutes was dominated by Chailey and the head wind, the second half was dominated by Broad Oak, who both woke up, perhaps as a result of the rain, and realised that kicking the ball into the air, against the wind, was not a good idea. From this point on the boys kept the ball low, fast, and really started to turn the game around. There were a number of attempts on goal and we started to get the measure of Chailey, who did not get it all their own way. The boys finished the end of the first-half, with a real flurry and the boys held their head high at the half time whistle. Half time score Chailey 0 : 0 Broad Oak. The Third Half (first 20 minutes of the second half)The boys came out with renewed vigour, partly as a result of the tail wind they now enjoyed, and partly through the party size box of Jaffa cakes that Kai brought along! With just 2 minutes of the third half played, following a bit of scrambling in the Chailey goal mouth, the ball came back to Spencer who smashed it into the back of the net! 1:0 to Broad Oak, the crowd went wild!!! With a quick substitution, Leuan came on for Lewis who had been instrumental in the change of fortunes in the second half. Within 1 minute, Leuan got his first touch of the ball, and with his second he scored to make it 2:0 to Broad Oak within 3 minutes of the third half, the crowd went wild again!!! At this point, Chailey were not smiling! Chailey did not give up though, they counter attacked and following a scramble in the Broad Oak goalmouth from a Chailey corner, they sneaked a goal back to make it 2:1 to Broad Oak. The game settled a little for the next 10 minutes or so, but new pace was injected into the game, just as the rain really started to fall, with a great goal from George after 19 minutes of the third half. A really good strike from some 25 yards, to the right of the goal, floating past the keeper at Mach 2! 3:1 to Broad Oak. If that was not enough, the boys kept on the pressure and with another scramble in the Chailey goal mouth, Leuan ended up on top of their keeper after a closely fought tussle between the two. As this was happening the ball came out of the mass of bodies and landed nicely at George's feet, 10 yards back from the goal, dead centre - George could not believe his good fortune and did not hesitate to take his chance - bang! into the back of the new at Mach 3 4:1 to Broad Oak, with 24 minutes of the third half played. The goal was not without incident. The Chailey Linesman had his flag up, following Leuan’s Double- Nelson on their keeper. The Referee kept to his decision, the goal stood. the linesman found this a difficult decision to bear and threw his flag to the ground. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain, the flag stuck fast into the ground at 45 degrees, leaving the linesman to walk over and pull it out! The Fourth Half (the last 15,20,25 minutes)The fourth and final half of the match was dominated by heavy rain, and the bloggers note pad got too soggy to write on. Following a pause in play during the third half, following a clash of heads between two Chailey players, extra time seemed to drift on and on into the match. The final minutes of the game were also dominated by an ever increasingly frustrated opposition. Their number 8 was yellow-carded for speaking back to the referee, and following a brief spell on the sideline, he came back on in disguise, orange headband removed, to continue to torment the Broad Oak players. But we were bigger than that, and at the final whistle the boys had a well- deserved win.
