30 January 12 - 11:47Saturday 28th January: League Game Vs Langton Green Dragons
Hi all
After around 6 weeks without a league game, we returned to action this weekend at home to Langton Green Dragons. It was a sunny but chilly morning at Tower Rec, with the pitch slightly sticky which meant passing and dribbling with ball would be difficult. Freddie made his debut for us after his recent signing and was eager to impress.
The game started off with equal amounts of possession for both sides in the congested midfield area which made for quite a scrappy opening. We soon managed to take hold of the game and start to dominate and create chances. Ollie had a great chance when TJ played him through, he rounded the goalkeeper but the ball held up in the mud and he could not make a decent connection with the shot which a defender cleared. He soon got on the score sheet though when played through down the left wing, he powered past their full back and towards goal, as their goalkeeper came out Ollie dinked a fantastic finish over him and into the net to give us a deserved lead. This settled us down well, and we played some good football, whilst looking very comfortable at the back. Any time Langton Green did come forward, our well drilled defensive unit covered each other well, with Freddie showing great confidence in his first game, alongside Fynn who was commanding, HP who was solid at right back, and Tom who kept everyone focussed at left back. Charlie had his best game of the season up front, he held up the ball well, and dribbled past two or three players on numerous occasions. He also played some precise balls through their defence. We still looked threatening every time we went forward, with two chances falling to Sam S on the left wing. The first when a cross from Harry L came towards him at the back post but he could not quite connect, the second when a curling cross from TJ was headed over from close range. 1-0 was the score at half time.
In the second half we brought on Zak, Ben and Alfie, and we continued to dominate. Two free kicks, one from Will and one from TJ, were well saved by their goalkeeper. TJ also his the bar with a shot from a tight angle. We needed that second goal to make things more comfortable, and it soon came. Ollie took the ball into the area, where Ben took over and laid off a brilliant pass into the stride of Will who slotted home from 8 yards. We could relax a little now! Alfie had a good chance to increase the lead after some wonderful work from Zak when he turned past two defenders and played Alfie through, but his shot went just wide. Meanwhile, we still looked solid at the back, with Elliot having very little to do, but he still remained focussed throughout. The third goal sealed the win, and a great goal it was, Will played Ollie through again, he rounded their goalkeeper with some good close touches, and placed the ball into the net for his second goal to round off a effective display from our top scorer. Further chances followed, but what was encouraging was how we maintained our discipline at the back to ensure we kept the clean sheet, which was almost as impressive as the 3 goals. 3-0 was the final score, a great TEAM performance with everyone playing their part. Good stuff boys!
Result:
Broad Oak and Horam 3-0 Langton Green Dragons (Scorers: Ollie 2 and Will) - League Position - 2nd

17 December 11 - 21:15Saturday 17th December: League Game Vs Wadhurst
Hi all
Our last league game before Christmas was against Wadhurst. With Tower Rec still unplayable, Wadhurst kindly offered to host the game at their Stonegate ground which was in a good condition and made for a competitive game on a cold morning.
Wadhurst started the game with good intensity and caught us cold, they kept the ball well and looked threatening. They were rewarded when their forward curled a wonderful shot right into the corner from 18 yards. We responded really well and started to pass the ball better, and got in behind their defence. We created numerous chances over the next 20 mins, Ollie had 4 one on ones with their keeper but he just could not find the finish, it was just one of those days for Ollie as nothing would go in for him! We kept going throughout, and were rewarded when an accurate cross from TJ was fired in by Ryan with his left foot, his first goal of the season. Sam B and HP combined well in central defence to keep it tight, Sam B especially, he won every tackle and showed good positioning. Matt was performing well in goal, including one great save when he dived full length to parry a shot wide. 5 mins before half time Wadhurst went ahead after a good through ball was followed by a low finish. 2-1 at half time was a little harsh in us, we had played well but just didnt take our chances.
In the second half we dominated the game and looked really confident and skillfull. Harry L made a difference, winning the ball and using it well in central midfield. Ollie had some more chances, but as I say it was just one of those days for him, the ball would not go in the net. We got a deserved equaliser when Will's curling corner fell to Ryan at the back post and he slotted it home for his second goal. Sam S and Tom were combining well down the left wing, with one covering the other, and playing the ball down the flanks to set up attacks. Will and TJ were also linking up brilliantly down the right too. TJ pulled out his full set of tricks, showing wonderful feet to out skill their full back and get in some great crosses and through balls. In the end we just could not find the winner, but never really looked like conceeding which was encouraging. The performance as a whole was probably our best of the season so far, lets take this positive momentum into the new year.
Result:
Broad Oak and Horam 2-2 Wadhurst Utd Ash (Scorer: Ryan 2)

06 December 11 - 21:43Saturday 3rd December: Inter-Divisional Game Vs Tenterden
Hi all
Our latest fixture was an inter-divisional game against Tenterden on Saturday. With Tower Rec waterlogged we decided to switch the fixture to Tenterden. A massive thanks to all the parents who got the boys to the game at such short notice, your help was much appreciated.
We started the game really well, and played the ball around well on a massive pitch which meant there was plenty of open spaces. These open spaces created an end to end game, with both teams catching eachother on the counter-attack, it just seemed a matter of time before we scored, but it was Tenterden who struck first. We were left a little light at the back and they over-loaded the back post and went 1-0 up. Two more goals followed before half time which were all very sloppy and too easy, which was very frustrating. At the other end we always looked like scoring, but just could not find that yard of space in the first half. Again, I sensed the boys frustration at half time at conceeding soft goals, and not taking our chances going forward.
In the second half the game continued to be open with lots of chances for both teams. We got a goal early on, a long ball over the top was well finished by Ollie to get ip back to 3-1. Ollie scored another, and Alfie continued his return to form when he finished off a great team move by smashing the ball in at the back post. But we continued to conceed soft goals, and were being hurt by their quick winger, and strong forwards. 7-3 was the final score, which is not a disgrace bearing in mind they are two divisions above us in the top league. It was also encouraging that we really did test them, but they were just a little more ruthless. But we did not defend well as a team, we will work on this at training in the next few weeks. The outstanding player for me was Harry Pearce, who showed pace, ability, skill and committment, in various positions, including in goal after Matt had to come off!!!
Result:
Tenterden 7-3 Broad Oak and Horam (Scorers: Ollie 2, Alfie)
Thanks

28 November 11 - 19:54Saturday 26th November: League Game Vs Uckfield
Hi all
Our latest league game took place last Saturday away to Uckfield.
It was an unlucky start for the boys with Uckfield at the side of the box their winger turned and hit a high cross which some drifted towards goal and just over Elliot’s head went in off the underside of the crossbar.
After the goal the boys didn’t let the heads drop and started to play some really good passing. Through the passing plenty of chances started occurring for the team. Eventually after some more good play throughout the whole team a through ball was played through to Ollie. Ollie went around the keeper and managed to score from what seemed an impossible angle.
A similar pattern followed to recent games in that in the last 30 seconds before half time the ball got played through our defence and their striker finished into the bottom corner.
We started the second half well keeping possession really well through the middle and playing the ball wide where the space was. We nearly equalised where some good pressure by the boys resulted in a good cross which the Uckfield keeper spilled but Ben's legs weren’t quite long enough to put the ball in the net. Shortly after some good passing down the right side of the pitch resulted in Will getting the ball where he managed to dribble the ball into the box and go around a defender and score with a powerful shot into the roof of the net. Unfortunately at the very end off the game we got caught at the back and another fortunate cross come shot from the Uckfield winger came off the crossbar and landed nicely for their striker to score. After this in the last 2 minutes we managed to get the ball under control and exploited the space Uckfield had left but we couldn’t quite get the final pass into the box the make the goal.
Overall a very good performance from every player today. The whole team showed better composure on the ball and were passing well. Also the defenders were doing well what we had worked on in training and were holding their positions well for the majority of the game. A final well done has to go to Elliot who made some top class saves throughout the game to keep us in with a chance of winning.
Result:
Uckfield 3-2 Broad Oak and Horam
Thanks

21 November 11 - 15:01Saturday 19th November: League Game Vs Green Lane Colts.
Hi all
After our big win last weekend we returned to league action this Saturday at home to Green Lane Colts on a muddy pitch at Tower Rec in front of a big crowd.
We started the game really well and got the ball down on the floor, passing it with great courage and skill. This led to us creating plenty of chances early on, with Ollie having the best when he was put through, rounded their goalkeeper but just could not find the angle for the finish. Alfie was continuing his return to form after his goal last week with a very positive performance this week. He linked the midfield and forwards with some confident and effective touches. Sam B and Fynn were forming a nice partership in the central defence which was keeping their striker quiet. Sam S and Tom E combined well down the left to stop their quick winger too. We looked nice and solid at the back and looked like creating chances in the first 15 mins. It was a real shame that we conceeded two soft goals mid-way through the half. A simple long ball over the top was put into the net, and no challenge was put on their winger after we failed to clear the ball and it was 2-0. Their only chances of the half.
We sensed that the boys were frustrated with the manner in which we conceeded the goals at half time, and also sensed a desire to put it right. The reaction in the second half from the boys was quite wonderful as totally dominated the half. We really lifted our intensity levels and played some great stuff against a very strong side. Zak made a terrific impact on the left wing, showing a calm touch on the ball, and passing it with precision. Matt also made a positive impact in the central areas by setting up chances for our strikers. We created so many opportunites to score in the half, but somehow we did not score. Ollie rounded their goalkeeper again, but could not find the finish. Will had two powerful free kicks scrambled away, TJ had a free kick well saved too. We hit the post with another shot from Ollie. It looked like we would score when we got a penalty after Will was fouled, but TJ's excellent penalty struck the bar. In the end I have no idea how we did not manage to score in that second half, we created so many chances, it was amazing really. If we had of got one, then more would have surely followed, it was just one of those days!!! What was good to see was the reaction from the boys in the second half, we really did play well and showed desire, committment and skill. We just did not have that bit of luck in front of goal.
I feel we are playing really well in the league at the moment and are not getting the results to back this up. The boys must keep it up, and the results will come.
Result:
Broad Oak and Horam 0-2 Green Lane Colts
Lastly, a massive thanks to Ruth, Caroline and Simon for doing the shop for us.
See you Wednesday at HCC.

12 November 11 - 15:19Saturday 12th November: Inter-Divisional game Vs Maresfield.
Hi all
This Saturday we played an inter-division game away to Maresfield. We welcomed back Elliot and Will into the side, with the likes of Charlie, Matt, Sam B and Ryan being rotated this week.
The opening stages of the game were very conjested, especially in the midfield area, this was due to Maresfield flooding the midfield along with a small pitch and us not passing the ball quickly enough. We soon got going though and went 1-0 up after 5 mins, Ollie was put through and finished smartly. From then on we totally dominated the whole game, without playing at our best in the first half. Ollie added to more goals to complete his hat-trick before half time with more composed and calm finishes. Will also scored a cracking free kick from the left side to make it 4-0 at half time. At this stage we were not playing at our best, and too many people were holding onto the ball for too long and not passing quick enough. Nevertheless, we still created numerous chances to score.
In the second half we played really well and dominated even further. Zak, Dylan and Sam S came on as we changed our formation slightly to a 3-4-3. Fynn now led the defence alongside Brogan and Sam S who all worked efficiently together. Going forward we were breathtaking I thought. Ollie was able to add 3 more goals to get a double hat-trick, the best was a wonderfully placed shot from a very tight angle having rounded their goalkeeper. The subs made a real positive impact. Zak scored his first goal of the season, controlling a corner and slotting the ball away. Dylan added to his tally, following up a shot that was spilled by their goalkeeper and diverting the ball into the net. Alfie had his best game of the season, he played some great balls behind their full backs to put our forwards through, he also had 4 shots from distance and eventually got his goal when a powerful shot crept in. Will ran the game from the central area, and scored 2 more goals to complete his hat-trick. The best a brilliant shot from well outside the area that was powered into the corner. The best goal of the game was from TJ. Dylan and Harry L combined well down the left wing by inter-changing passes, the ball was played across the edge of the box, TJ let the ball role across his body onto his right foot, and his shot was placed wonderfully right into the corner, TJ showed world class technical abilty for the goal. The whole team played their part in the win though, Harry P was very solid at the back in the first half, and did well on the right wing in the second half. Ben was a steady influence on the game, and did well at centre back late on in the game. Elliot kept his concentration well and made some very smart saves, and almost saved their penalty in the final minutes.
The final score was 13-1, and could have been more. We scored 9 goals in the second half and played really well, we passed the ball quickly and effectively. We also showed that we are ruthless and kept going for more goals. Everyone in the team played their part in a real team performance. It is key that we do not get complacent going into Saturday's game against Green Lane Colts.
Result:
Maresfield 1-13 Broad Oak and Horam (Scorers: Ollie 6, Will 3, Dylan, Zak, Alfie, TJ)
Well done boys.

06 November 11 - 22:32Saturday 5th November: League Game Vs Wadhurst
Hi all
Our lastest league game took place last Saturday away to Wadhurst at Stonegate.
We started the game really well, we got the ball down on the floor and passed it with confidence and accuracy. Our main threats came from down the wings, our new left winger Sam Sheppard settling into a new role really well. He beat his full back with a neat little turn, and threaded a lovely ball through to Ollie who skipped past 2 and fired the ball into the net for 1-0. We didnt sit back after this though, and continued to power forward with pace and determination. The second goal came soon after, Harry Laddiman powered through their defence, fainted to go one way, went the other, and slotted the ball under their goalie for a brilliant goal. Harry L was excelling in his central role, in place of Will who was unavailble. Wadhurst played some good football too in what was a wonderful game to watch. Matt made a quite brilliant save from a fierce shot, but the rebound was put in, and their winger smashed in an unstoppable shot to bring them level. They scored a third soon after to take a 3-2 lead and we looked a little nervous. We showed great spirit and soon levelled on the stroke of half time, TJ corner went straight in which was amazing, I am still not sure how he managed that. 3-3 at half time.
The second half was just as attacking as the first from both sides, with both having numerous chances to score. The best chance fell to Alfie but his well placed shot was really well saved by their goalie. Dylan was also put through but he couldnt quite hold of the defender. TJ was brilliant all game, he dominated in the air, showed great skill on the ball, as well as a real determination to work hard for the team. He set up numerous chances for others. The key goal came soon after half time though, another great goal from them, curled right into the corner. Towards the end we took of the impressive Sam B and played just 3 at the back to go looking for the equaliser. Unfortunatly Wadhurst used the extra space well, and scored 2 further goals. 6-3 the final score, which even their manager said was very harsh on us.
Overall it was a really positive attacking performance, we passed the ball really well, competed well in the tackles, created loads of chances and worked really hard. We were beaten by a few top quality goals which would have beaten any goalie in the league. If we play like the all the time we will win more games for sure.
Heads up boys, the performances are good at the moment, but we arnt getting the results, lets put that right next week!
Thanks

15 October 11 - 14:29Saturday 15th October: Inter-Divisional game Vs Ridgewaye Tigers
Hi all
Our latest fixture was against Ridgewaye Tigers in an inter-divisional game, Ridgewaye are in the league above us and have won all their games.
Ian and I stressed before the game that it was key that we won our tackles and were stronger in the challenges, which we had been working on in training. If we did this and showed composure on the ball then we would be able to compete. Nevertheless, we didnt really do this in the first 10mins, and Ridgewaye punished us, going 1-0 up early on. Soon after we got going though, and started to play much better. The defenders and midfield were winning their tackles and passing the ball around the pitch with greater composure, led by Sam B at the back. It was a bit of brilliance from Sam that set up our first goal, he controlled the ball well at the back, and instead of booting it upfield, picked out a great pass, which led to the ball with Ollie who twisted and turned round 3 players and curled a shot into the corner for a quite wonderful team goal. Up until half time we threatenend their goal alot, Will had a shot that hit the post, Harry L solo run and shot was well saved by their keeper and Ryan could not quite connect with a cross in the 6 yard box. 1-1 at half time.
We had planned to put Harry L in goal for the second half, but Matt was doing well, and Harry effective in midfield so we kept it the same. Alfie came on at left back, Zak on the right wing, and Charlie up front. Again, we were competing really well in all areas, winning the 50-50 tackles and looking quite solid. We were rewarded when Matt's long drop kick put Ollie through, and he took the ball on and slotted in the corner to make it 2-1. Ridgewaye are a good side though, and they scored a good goal with a well placed shot into the side netting to make it 2-2 soon after. At this point the game could have gone either way, Ollie had a great chance but he put his shot inches wide. Ridgewaye won the game 10mins from the end, their quick winger got through, and Sam had to bring him down, he had no option, and they scored the resulting penalty. We could not create the chances late on, as hard as we tried. 3-2 was how it finished.
Even though we lost, there are many positives to take from this game. At last we started to win tackles, and showed composure on the ball, passing it around the midfield well. Everyone competed well and gave 100%. Bearing in mind Ridgewaye are top of the league above us, it was a really good performance, and we were unlucky not to get a draw at least.
Well done boys.
Thanks

09 October 11 - 22:14Saturday 8th October: League game Vs Uckfield
Hi all
Our fourth league game of the season was against Uckfield at Tower Rec on Saturday. The game started quite evenly with most of the possession in the congested middle third of the pitch. As time went on Uckfield started to take control of the game with their very quick forward players, which enabled them to score 2 quick goals mid-way through the half. Our defensive line was a bit high and we were caught out in behind us which was dissapointing. Nevertheless, this sparked us into life a we had a very good 15 mins up until half time, and were rewarded when Will smashed in a free kick from 25 yards to make it 2-1. We were now competing much better for the ball, winning challenges and creating chances to score. It was a shame though when Uckfield scored a goal right on half time to make it 3-1 and dent our confidence.
The second half was a more even match with fewer scoring opportunities for both sides. Uckfield made it 4-1 with a very good goal from the edge of the area and Ian and I decided to change things around a bit. Tom E was pushed forward into midfield, Dylan onto the wing, enabling Matt and Will to take up more attacking roles. This worked almost straight away when TJ pounced on a defensive error, and slotted the ball calmly into an empty net, 4-2 and we were back in the game. We were unable to create many more chances though as we pushed forward late on. Matt had a good header go over the bar, and Tom had a shot well saved. 4-2 was the final score in a game where we never seemed to get going.
After the game we talked to players and said that we were still being too weak in the tackles and challenges, its almost as though we are too nice, even if in training the boys kick lumps out of eachother!!! At the moment we are conceeding too many soft goals because we are not winning tackles. We missed the pace of Ollie and Harry L though too. We have played the top three teams in the league in the last three weeks, and competed well in all games without getting the results. If we can just cut out the errors, and be stronger in the challenges, we will be fine.
Result:
Broad Oak and Horam 2-4 Uckfield Grasshoppers (Scorers: Will and TJ)

04 October 11 - 00:06Saturday 1st October: League game Vs Jarvis Brook
Hi all
Our third league game of the season took place last Saturday away against a strong Jarvis Brook side. We had to have a slight re-shuffle with Elliot unavailable in goal as he was away playing for our East Sussex District team. He played very well in a tournament against numerous strong teams, only conceeding 2 goals all day and impressing his manager.
Matt replaced him in goal and performed well bearing in mind he has not played in goal for a while. We started the game well and dominated possession for the first period of the game with some good passing down our left hand side. As the game settled down we started to look a bit nervy on the ball and misplaced passes resulting in lots of possession for Jarvis Brook. Our defence also stopped working as a unit unlike the early games of the season which left a big gap trough the middle which resulted in them scoring the opening goal. They made it 2-0 soon after with a slightly fortunate finish. Just before half time Will took control of the game and picked up the ball and dribbled past 3 Jarvis Brook players and scored from outside the box into the bottom left hand corner leaving their keeper with no chance.
Harry L had his first chance to go in goal in the second half. The teams shape improved and we showed flashes of the offensive and defensive qualities we know we have. As we looked to get back into the game and left a few gaps, Jarvis Brook scored 2 quick goals. The team did show good last ditch defending towards the end of the game when they seemed certain to score more. Late on we got a penalty which TJ scored comfortably to put us back into the game again bit it was too late. We did finish off by playing some good football with better movement and one touch play. The main thing to remember from the game is to be more composed on the ball, do not be scared to take a touch or dribble with the ball instead of aimlessly clearing it.
The league is very tight at the moment, and it seems all the sides are quite equal. One win for us could see us go top, but one defeat could see us at the bottom, it is all very close!
Result:
Jarvis Brook 4-2 Broad Oak and Horam (Scorers: Will and TJ)
League Position: 5th
Mid-week training will continue at Tower Rec on Wednesdays for the moment, 6pm until dark. We will be moving the the all-weather pitch at Heathfield Community College very soon though...
Any queries please email or call me.
Thanks

26 September 11 - 21:41Saturday 24th September: Cup game Vs Green Lane Colts
This was the second game in succession against this capable team, this time in a Cup game. Trying to adapt to combat their style of play, we changed our formation accordingly. Alfie moved to left back; Ben moved to left wing and Tom moved into a holding position between defence and Midfield.
The boys played their socks off in the first half. They moved up and down the pitch fluidly, passing the ball left and right, showing great awareness throughout. Green Lane probably thought they were going to have another win, but Broad Oak thought otherwise. Through great teamwork and passing, Ollie tore up their defence on many occasions and was unlucky not to score. Harry used his speed to great effect on the right hand side. Brogan was switched on and robust in defence…
Towards the end of the first half, Broad Oak went 1-0 up when Will was able to shoot from the right hand side of the box – a deserved goal. A points win definitely for Broad Oak in the first half!
In the second half, Green Lane came back strongly. I suspect that the boys became a little distracted and lost their focus. A through ball to their pacey striker saw him bear down on goal. Our formation was not as it should have been, and unfortunately a penalty was awarded against Harry as he tried desperately to get a tackle in. 1-1.
The momentum then swung in their favour. Green Lane launched successive attacks which saw further goals come thick and fast. Before we knew it they were 4-1 up, which was a little unfair considering how well the boys played in the first half. Elliot was as keen as ever in goal. Of the goals scored against the team, two shots were initially well saved, but unfortunately the ball rebounded back and was then knocked back past him.
Ok , so we became a little ragged in our formation, and allowed them to dominate a little too easily at times but the team kept going…Broad Oak struck back to make it 4-2 when Tom got presented an opportunity a few yards out. Was there a comeback in the making?
Green Lane came back again and scored once more. Broad Oak rallied again and good passing and movement starting in defence saw Harry receive the ball on the right wing and threaten again. A fantastic cross was delivered which Tom headed in calmly.
This made for an exciting climax to the game with Green Lane now 5-3 up. Despite their best efforts there was no upset. A final goal for the opposition saw the match end 6-3.
The boys were a little disappointed by the result, but should be very proud of their performance. Their work rate was fantastic – especially in the first half. There were some lovely moves in the game as the boys demonstrate that they can pass the ball and be more tactically aware. If we can do this a little more consistently then I’m sure they will see the rewards.
The Ref made approached me after the game. He sees boys play week in week out – of all abilities. He commented what a good team Broad Oak were, both in ability and attitude.
Don’t be down hearted! Let’s look forward to next week.
Result:
Green Lane Colts 6-3 Broad Oak and Horam (Scorers: Will, Tom E 2)

22 September 11 - 00:07Saturday 17th September: League game Vs Green Lane Colts
Hi all
Our second league game of the season took place last Saturday away to Green Lane Colts of Paddock Wood. The weather was horrific during the warm up but it did improve in time for the game thankfully.
The game started in a very open manner with both sides threatening to score with every attack. As with Hailsham last week I think we defended a bit to high up the pitch which left lots of room in behind our defence which their wingers could expolit. Their right winger caused us the most problems, he was very quick and skilful and got past our full backs to get in the box. With the pitch being so big we just needed to drop a little deeper and keep them in front of us. As well as the big pitch, the goals were massive too, which meant that Elliot had no chance with their first two goals which were well placed high into the corner, Elliott did well to even get a hand on them. The third goal we conceeded was much to soft though, we missed three tackles and let their forward through too easily, we must go into the tackles harder with a real desire to win the ball or we will let in goals like that. The goal we did score was classy though, and came from the first bit of flowing football we played. Ollie and Will combined down the right wing with accurate one touch passing to get behind their full back, then Will fired a low cross into the box to the feet of Matt who was arriving late from the midfield. The fininsh by Matt was brilliant, passing the ball first time into the net showing great technical ability. 3-1 at half time.
As with the Hailsham game, at half time we encouraged the defence to drop a bit deeper in the second half, and for the wide players to get the ball forward quicker. I thought we played really well in the second half and created numerous chances to score. Ollie had a couple of shots well saved, Matt did as well, and TJ caused Green Lane problems with his terrific skills. We passed the ball around with confidence and courage on a very tricky wet surface. As we pushed forward looking for the goals to get us back into the game we left a few gaps at the back, which was understandable, and Elliot made some good saves. Had we scored a goal early in the second half then I think we may have got a draw, but it did not quite happen. Nevertheless, a goaless half of football which will be quite rare this season!!
Overall, a 3-1 loss to team who beat Wadhurst in their first game wasnt bad, but we could have got a draw. We played some good football throughout which was a real positive, we just need to tighten up at the back and defend as a team.
Result:
Green Lane Colts 3-1 Broad Oak and Horam (Scorer: Matt)
League position - 4th

12 September 11 - 23:39Saturday 10th Sept: League Game Vs Hailsham Match Report
Under 11 Villa Division – Broad Oak and Horam Vs Hailsham United
Tower Rec hosted our first competitive 11-a-side league game on Saturday against well known opponents in Hailsham United. There was a big crowd on the banks to support the team as we started our league campaign.
Both side started slightly nervously I thought, with much of the game happening in the congested midfield area but we steadily gained a foothold in the game and started to threaten Hailsham. The first goal came soon after, Ladders was played through down the right wing and was fouled in the area giving us a penalty. TJ stepped up calmly and slotted the penalty in to the bottom left hand corner, right into the side netting, to put as 1-0 up. Hailsham came back into the game and scored an equaliser soon after from close range. In the past we may have let our heads drop after conceding, but the lads showed great spirit and lifted their game and levels of focus. We were soon back in the lead when Ollie was put through and showed great pace to beat their defender and curl a shot past their keeper from just inside the box. After this Hailsham caught us short on the counter attack by scoring a further good goal. We were caught a bit too high up the pitch and our defensive line were not quite together which cost us. 2-2 at half time. We discussed this with the boys at half time, and urged the defenders to drop off a little to close the space in behind them, they put this into practice perfectly in the second half.
We made three changes at half time and moved a few players around, Ladders was now at full back replacing the impressive Fynn, Dylan replaced the hard working Ben in the holding midfield role, and Zak replaced Alfie on the wing, TJ also moved to the wing with Matt in the midfield. I thought we dominated the second half, and looked much safer at the back. We soon got back ahead thanks to the goal scoring machine that is Dylan!! It was a bit of a scramble but they all count, it was unclear who got the final touch, but Dylan certainly claimed it, and I’ll give the goal to him, that’s 3 goals so far. Unfortunately, Hailsham got a further equaliser soon after and it looked like we might not get the win, but we came soaring back into the game and scored direct from the kick off. Will eased past two players, passed to Ollie who beat two more, and fired an accurate shot into the corner. 4-3, what a game. The game was sealed late on when Ollie completed his hat-trick with a wonderful piece of individual skill, back heeling Wills cross into the goal from 6 yards. 5-3 was how it stayed, it could have been more, but we will certainly settle for the 3 points.
Everyone played their part in the win, it was a great game to watch and very encouraging for the rest of the season. Well done boys.
Result:
Broad Oak and Horam 5-3 Hailsham United (Scorers: Ollie 3, Dylan and TJ)
League position: 3rd.

04 September 11 - 00:59Saturday 3rd September: 11-a-side tournament
Hi all
Well done to all the boys who played the tournament on Saturday Vs Hailsham and Langton Green. There were numerous positives to take from the day and every player played their part in the team performance. It was a very long day of football, and although the boys tired towards the end, they all showed great desire and committment and gave their all right to the end. We competed well in all 4 games, which included a very good win against Hailsham, thanks to a calm left footed finish from Ollie and a tap in from Tom Evans to complete a 2-1 win, alongise a 0-0 draw. Against Langton Green we applied ourselves well, but an unfortunate own goal put us behind. Will Scored a screamer of a volley to get is back into it but we could hold on, loosing 2-1. In our final game we lost 2-0. Langton Green are two leagues above us this year, so these were not bad results.
Overall I think you would agree that it was a worthwhile excercise, and one we can take a lot of positives from.
Scores:
Broad Oak and Horam 2-1 Hailsham
Broad Oak and Horam 1-2 Langton Green
Broad Oak and Horam 0-0 Hailsham
Broad Oak and Horam 0-2 Langton Green

30 August 11 - 14:29Match Report: Saturday 27th August Vs Forest Row
Hi all
On Saturday we had our first pre-season friendly away to a strong Forest Row side. With quite a few people still away on holiday we were reduced down to 13 players out of squad of 20, leaving 2 subs. We found ourselves really short on defenders and so Ian and I took a bit of a risk by playing 3 at the back, compared to our usual 4. All the players showed great adaptability and played the new formation with good courage and skill, which was pleasing. With an unfamiliar formation, and players playing in new positions it was always going to be tough but all the boys adapted really well.
The first half of the game was quite open with both sides creating numerous opportunities to score. Ollie was our main threat up front, supported well by Ryan, both having good shots from long range that were blocked or saved. The Forest Row team played really deep which made it hard for us to get in behind them and threaten their goal. Our back 3 worked really well as a unit, catching their forward offside at least 5 times and generally winning every challenge. Ben was shielding them well in his holding midfield position, and Dylan and Matt worked tirelessly in the midfield, helping the forwards and defenders. I am not quite sure how the half ended 0-0, but it did!
In to the second half and the game continued to be quite open. The breakthrough came about 20 mins from the end when their forward deflected in a good cross to put Forest Row 1-0 up. After this we showed great character and got ourselves back into the game with a fantastic team goal. Our midfield trio won the ball back in the centre circle, and threaded it through to Ollie who controlled the ball, got his head up and picked out Dylan making a late run through the defense. Dylan controlled the ball and took the ball around their keeper and slotted the ball into the empty net, and great goal. I think we may have got a bit carried away after this, and showed signs of fatigue in the last 10mins as Forest Row pilled on the pressure and scored 4 late goals. This was harsh on us, but a few little errors cost us. We also have to bear in mind that they had 5 or 6 Under 12 players playing for them as they were short, and these players just had that little bit of extra quality.
Nevertheless, it was a really promising performance.
Lastly, well done to Elliot who played his first game for the Sussex Under 11 District side on Sunday. Ian and I went to watch and he played really well.
Thanks
Ollie

22 May 11 - 21:19Wednesday 18th May - 11-a-side friendly Vs East Grinstead
Our third 11-a-side friendly took place last Wednesday on a murky evening on a rock hard pitch at Horam against East Grinstead. I cut down the squad to a much more manageable 15 players, with the subs training alongside the Pythons whilst the friendly was in progress.
We started very encouragingly in the game, bearing in mind I was trying out some players in new and unfamiliar positions. The first portion of the game was very even and competitive, with a lot of the play in the middle third of the pitch. We created some good chances when we knocked the ball over the top for Ryan and Toby to chase willingly. Nevertheless we went 1-0 down midway through the half after some good play from East Grinstead. We came straight back at them though and soon got rewarded when Ben weaved his way through their defence and clipped a lovely shot into the far corner of the net to bring us level. Ben was showing his versatility again as I played him in the holding midfield role in front of our centre backs, he did his job brilliantly, and got involved going forward, as shown by his goal.
Into the second third of the game and we needed to be strong in defence as East Grinstead pilled on the pressure. My defenders coped well, always keeping their shape and discipline, constantly talking and helping each other out, as I had asked. The two Sams looked good in the full back positions again, and Harry P performed well at centre back which was an unfamiliar position for him. Elliot continued to pull of some world class saves throughout, even after taking a kick to the head in the first minute of the game. Matt came on for his first game out on pitch and showed me great effort and determination to close down their defenders and be a general handful.
In the last third of the game we showed signs of fatigue, which was always going to happen on a big pitch and with fewer subs. Also, East Grinstead started playing some effective football, their 3rd goal was quite brilliant and no defence or goal keeper would have been able to stop it. We continued to try our hardest though, but a few players started to not do their jobs properly which cost us. We did score another goal, and a very simple one too, a cross from Alfie was well directed and Ryan was able to tap in from 2 yards. A true strikers goal.
Well done to you all, and well done at World Cup Day too, the USA were worthy winners again, but it was a fun and enjoyable day for everyone.
It was quite an even game and 4-2 seemed to flatter them a bit, but I was very pleased with how everyone seems to have got a good grasp of 11-a-side football so early on. We looked a real threat up front at times, and our defensive unit it working well together.

07 May 11 - 17:49Saturday 7th May: 11-a-side Vs South Malling
Our second 11-a-side friendly took place at Horam on Saturday Vs South Malling with the boys looking to build upon their encouraging start against Hailsham on Wednesday evening. We were at full strength again with 21 players and therefore 10 subs!!!
Again we played three lots of 20 minutes and we started well in the first of these. We moved Ben from defence into midfield and he was able to dictate the game from that position, breaking up attacks and moving the ball with great accuracy and skill to our wide players. This helped Alfie who was able to effect the game much more on the right wing, he continually battled to win the ball and take on their full back with his confident dribbling skills, leading to him getting some good crosses into the box. The best chance of the half fell to Charlie when the ball fell at his feet but he could not direct his shot towards the goal. It was unfortunate when South Malling took the lead in relatively simple fashion, but overall a decent half of football.
Into the second part of the game and a few changes were made. This seemed to work as we dominated the half and pinned South Malling in their own half for prolonged periods and created numerous chances. The best of them fell to TJ but his shot from the edge of the 6 yard box went narrowly wide when it seemed easier to score. It was cruel on us when they scored again on the counter attack but the boys kept battling. We were rewarded towards the end of the half when a shot went across the area and Tom E was able to slot home from close range. Ollie could have had a few goals but his shots were blocked or went just wide. It was harsh on us to end this half behind at 2-1.
Into the last part of the game and a few more changes were made. We were punished in this period of the game by some sloppy mistakes costing us goals. But as I said on Wednesday, mistakes will be made, but we must make sure we learn from them, and I am sure we will. Nevertheless, the boys kept going to the end and continued to play some very good football. The best move saw Ollie and Alfie play a 1 2 down the right wing, Alfie sent a powerful cross into the box which was met on the volley by Ben but it went just over the bar. We did score a consolation late on when will had a shot from the edge of the area which flew into the top corner.
5-2 was the final score, but we gave them 3 goals really, and could have scored a lot more ourselves. The standard of football was good though, and we kept our shape relatively well, just a few costly defensive errors.
Result:
Broad Oak and Horam 2-5 South Malling (Scorers: Tom E and Will)

04 May 11 - 23:43Wednesday 4th May: 11-a-side Vs Hailsham
Wednesday evening saw us play our first ever 11-a-side game at home against Hailsham. Bearing in mind this was our first experience of 11-a-side, and that Hailsham have already played some games, I thought we equipped ourselves very well. We certainly attracted a big crowd of parents and spectators which was very nice to see.
The first few minutes of the game were very encouraging, we immediately got the ball down on the floor and started passing with great precision and ability, we looked like we had been playing 11-a-side for years!!! This led to us taking lead with TJ firing a powerful shot low and into the corner of the net from the edge of the box. Hailsham got back into the game through a slightly fortunate goal, I think Elliot thought we were playing in smaller mini soccer goals!!! Never mind, this is what these games are for, we will all make mistakes, but what matters is that we learn from them, and I am sure Elliot will learn from this!!! He showed his character though by keeping his head up and making a key save at the feet of their striker late in the half. Soon after we re-took the lead with Will looping a shot high over their keeper and under the bar, a classy finish. 2-1 after the first third.
We changed the team for the second third, including putting Matt in goal. Hailsham lifted their game for this part of the game and scored two good goals, a header from a free kick and an unstoppable shot into the corner. Nevertheless, the majority of our players kept to their positions and did the jobs that were asked of them. In addition to this all the players continued with our passing game and not giving in to the temptation to hoof the ball aimlessly up field. Our third goal came after a shot was saved and the ball landed in the 6 yard box for Alfie to follow up and tap into the net, the easiest goal he will score!!!
Into the final third and we continued threaten the Hailsham defence. Ollie had a couple of great chances to get on the score sheet, but his shots with his left and right foot were well saved or went agonisingly wide of the post. What was also encouraging was how our strikers, Ollie and Ryan, showed great awareness to keep themselves onside, never straying offside. They have learnt already to hold their runs until the ball is played and use their pace and power to get on the end of them. On one of these occasions, Ollie held his run, stayed onside, was played through, and was fouled in the box to earn us a penalty, TJ confidently slotted in the penalty to cancel out a fourth Hailsham goal.
4-4 was the final score, probably a fair result, but we would have liked to have won it. Naturally, there are things to work on, but this is a learning process for us all, including Ian and I, and as long as we continue to work hard we will be fine. Let’s hope for a win and a good performance against South Malling at Horam on Saturday. Overall, very encouraging signs, well done boys.
Result:
Broad Oak and Horam 4-4 Hailsham (Scorers - TJ 2, Will, Alfie)

04 May 11 - 00:05Saturday 30th April: Cobras and Vipers Vs Langton Green
Our last ever mini soccer league game took place on Saturday at Horam, with Langton Green the visitors. Again, with the Cobras and Vipers slightly short of players, we were able to call up the Pythons to bolster the ranks.
The first game began with the Cobras punching forward determinedly, and Alfie applying early pressure against the LG defence, using his speed to good effect to stretch and test their strength. At the back, Dylan showed he is fully prepared to show good defensive ability, with a great defensive header to clear the ball away from the goal area. Although the Cobras had lots of possession the boys were not quite able to make the most of this by stringing enough passes together to be rewarded with a goal. The first goal when it did come went to LG, a simple move finished off by the ball being directed in from about 5 yards out which was just out of reach of Matts out stretched hands. Back came the Cobras though, with Fynn trying to encourage his team mates with positive defensive clearances and rallying cries! They were unlucky to concede another goal in the first half, the ball being thumped past Matt and high into the roof of the net. A shot that would have beaten most keepers…Into the second half then, with Coach Ollie introducing Tom E, Harry L and TJ. The game continued in a similar way to the first half, with pretty much 50% possession either way. The Cobras seemed to put a few more passes together in the 2nd half, with a few more positive attempts on goal which saw the LG keeper tested more. Matt remained equally busy in goal in the 2nd half, making numerous saves, with TWO fantastic saves in the space of a minute to keep the score at 2-0. At the final whistle, LG took the points with a 2-0 win.
The 2nd match started equally well for the Cobras. Some corners were won which clearly put LG under pressure. It wasn’t all attacking moves for the boys though. LG were keen to push forward in numbers when they could. Ben showed continuing development with defensive skills to frustrate LG – reading the ball well, and showing great composure with his “interceptions”. Harry L had a couple of chances on goal after some lovely passing through midfield. LG then won a free kick at the edge of the penalty box. The shot duly went through the wall (MUST STAND STRONG!!) and into the goal. 1 – 0 LG. Ladders almost equalised just before half time – but their goalie saved. Soon after the restart, and a chance for Ryan…A through ball finds him in space, and running at their penalty box. Ryan showed a cool head and slotted the ball neatly past the goalie to level the score 1-1. LG then almost surged back into the lead. A shot straight from the kick off almost went past Matt, who did well to knock the ball out for a corner. 1-1 then and all to play for. The Cobras had a surge of energy. Dylan took a throw in from the right with the ball passed to TJ. With the ball still bouncing, TJ volleyed from distance from about 20 yards out and saw his shot fly straight past the goalie to put the Cobras 2-1 up. With the pressure still against them, LG were defending a corner. The ball was driven in low and hard and reached their goalie. He wasn’t able to quickly smother the ball though, and Harry P showed a determination to follow in on the ball, before getting enough contact on it to knock it in for the 3rd Cobras goal. Not long afterwards the final whistle went, with the Cobras deservedly the Victors at 3 – 1. A much better performance this time. Better passing and movement, with the boys more focused and determined throughout. The three quality goals were a great bonus!
Onto the Vipers and their first game. They were able to call up Elliot in goal with Zak being unavailable. From the very first whistle the Vipers dominated this game and never looked like they would not win. The opening goal came after a good corner drilled in from Will which went in off a LG defender, one for the dubious goal panel, I think we will give the goal to Will though!!! The boys continued to dominate the game, playing some very simple but effective passing football from back to front which cut through their defence with relative ease. Playing like this we created numerous chances and showed a ruthless attitude by never looking to let our levels drop. Ollie kept up his terrific form by tearing the LG defence apart all day and earning another hat-trick of goals, taking him to a personal milestone of 30 league goals for the season, a wonderful achievement, one you should be very proud of and shows he is one of the best strikers in the whole league. The scoring was finished off by Will at the end to complete a very good performance from the lads, 5-0, and it could have been more. This was a very good all round team performance in which our defenders broke up their attacks quickly, moved the ball to our attacking players who caused them problems continually.
The Vipers started this match as they finished the last with some good passing which lead to the ball being passed to Tom B on edge of the box who smashed the ball into roof of the net, one of the goals of the season!!! In this match the Vipers were tested a lot more at the back with LG having very good striker, however Sam B and Sam S did very well at the back keeping the strikers shots at a distance. Then another break by the Vipers led to Will scoring the second. Unfortunately straight after scoring the Langton striker found himself with the ball and managed to score. At half time Sam S was put in goal and Elliot was given a rare chance out pitch. The LG team had most of the possession in the second half and despite many good saves from Sam S and some good defending form Sam B and Brogan the team couldn’t stop Langton from getting three more goals. Despite the score line the Vipers played well and had some very good passing moves and kept their discipline by everyone keeping the teams shape. Maybe the Vipers got a bit complacent after the first game and after going 2-0 up, but this shows you must never let your levels drop or teams, especially teams as talented as LG, will punish you as they did in the second half.
Overall, it was a good way to finish of the season with two wins and another 6 points to our league tally. You all looked like you were enjoying yourselves and we play better with that attitude. We now move on to 11 a side friendlies and the summer tournaments and if we show the same attitude, commitment and enjoyment then we will do well.
Results:
Cobras 0-2 Langton Green (Man of the Match - Harry P)
Vipers 5-0 Langton Green (Scorers - Ollie 3, Will 2 - Man of the Match - Will)

27 April 11 - 22:21Saturday 23rd April: Pythons Vs Paddock Wood
Hi all
The Pythons final game of the season was another battle against Paddock Wood on Saturday. The boys went into these games knowing that good performances might see them win the league. Were they nervous? It didn’t appear so from the touchlines, more a case of quiet confidence.
The opening minutes saw both teams testing each other out quite evenly. An early Paddock Wood attack brought about a great save from Elliot. Soon afterwards, TJ took a throw which Will received, controlled and shot low towards goal but their goalie did well to stop it. Ollie soon started to cause problems for their defence with his speedy runs forward. On one of these moves, he received the ball, saw the goalie was well off of his line and cleverly lobbed the ball right over his head. A Paddock Wood defender did well to clear the ball inches from the goal line. TJ had a good shot from the right side of the penalty box, which went just over the bar, as did another attempt from Ollie soon after. It wasn’t all one way traffic though. Both Brogan and Taran were switched on and determined in defence. Numerous tackles and clearances were made by both, which often allowed the Pythons to immediately counter attack. At half time though the score remained 0-0. In the second half, the Pythons continued to string passes together. One of these moves started on the right, moved through midfield to Tom on the left. His shot was saved by the Paddock Wood goalie who was being kept busy… Despite many attacks and attempts on goal, the ball would not cross the line. Then Paddock Wood attacked once more with their forward in a one-on-one with Elliot. Standing on the side line I was convinced that they must score but Elliot made a fantastic block to further frustrate them. Soon after, Will took a free kick, firing the ball straight into the 6 yard area. The ball bounced loose and fell at Ollie’s feet before he knocked it past into the goal. 1-0. The last few minutes were tense. Paddock Wood were playing downhill and they were pressuring the Pythons. Ben (on for Taran), man marked their No 9, and stifled him completely, tackling and denying him room to move. Great to watch… Then the final whistle blew, to the relief of Coaches and Parents!
Having received some coaching tips and guidance from Ian, and topping up the fluids due to the hot weather, the boys went into their 2nd game. In the 2nd minute, TJ crossed in from the right side presenting Tom with an early opportunity. Tom duly tapped in giving the Pythons an early lead. Elliot was soon called into action though, as Paddock Wood attacked downhill towards the Pythons goal. Another outstanding save followed. The game continued to move up and down the pitch, end to end action, and very exciting to watch. Tom was presented with another opportunity and saw his attempt bounce off the crossbar. Meanwhile, Ben was heads-up in defence and doing his very best to break up their attacks. Brogan started another move. This time up the left wing, passing neatly to Tom who saw his shot go left of the goal. The 2nd half continued in a similar fashion. A great cross from Will was inches away from Ollie making contact a yard or two in front of goal. Then Paddock Wood attacked again… Brogan maintaining his position as a central defender was really working well to prevent them from getting at Elliot’s goal. Soon after though, a long kick from their goalie bounced off the hard ground and through to their forward who levelled the score 1-1. It must have been at about this time that Ollie had his 2nd wind. With his pace and determination, he started to tear up the Paddock Wood defence. 2-1 came about when he dribbled past 3 or 4 defenders to score from a few yards out. 3-1, when he picked up the ball in midfield and charged in, in a straight line slotting the ball into the net accurately along the ground. The final goal came about after a corner. Ollie himself won the corner, finding himself with the ball on the far touchline with no support available, he knocked the ball off the defender. This showed great awareness. As the corner came in, the ball bounced free and was not able to be cleared before Ollie buried it to make the score 4-1. That’s how the game finished.
Results: Pythons 1-0 Paddock Wood Woods (Goal scorer: Ollie – Man of the Match: TJ – for all round teamwork and effort)
Pythons 4-1 Paddock Wood Wizards (Goal scorers: Tom, Ollie 3 – Man of the Match: Ollie - for demonstrating great attacking instinct and determination, and a great 2nd half hat trick)
Altogether, great performances from all the boys. In goal, defence and attack. If this was the day the Pythons won the league, then what a way to do it.
Well done boys,
Ollie

19 April 11 - 00:16Saturday 16th April: Cobras and Vipers Vs Paddock Wood
Hi all
On Saturday the Cobras and Vipers had their penultimate league game at home to Paddock Wood, who occupy second place in the league. With numerous players unavailable we mixed up the teams a bit, with the Pythons being split between the two to provide vital cover. Any positive results against this very strong team would have been a bonus, but the attitude, work rate and commitment of all the boys was great to see.
First up the Cobras faced the stronger Paddock Wood team and matched them for the first half. We had Elliot in goal who could alleviate any pressure by launching the ball the full length of the pitch from goal kicks, in addition to making some key saves. Our back three, now getting accustomed to playing with each other, looked like a combative unit who have learnt to communicate well with each other. Harry Pearce looked solid at right back, especially bearing in mind he was up against their star player for the majority of the time. He was able to control him, and limit his influence on the game. Ben continued his development as a skilful full back, continually confusing the opposition with his tight turns and close ball control, setting up attacks for Alfie down the left wing. We created numerous chances in this game. Alfie and Ryan linked beautifully with some one touch passing around the edge of the box which led to Alfie blasting a shot just wide, this was a wonderful move that deserved a goal. Dylan also had a great chance when the ball was squared to him in front of goal. Unfortunately, he could not control his shot on a bobbling pitch and it ended up over the bar. In the second half Paddock Wood were able to take a degree of control and their midfield players started to dominate. They scored a very good goal early on which knocked our confidence. Nevertheless, we still created chances to score goals but just could not take them. In the end 3-0 was very harsh on us, and it was very encouraging that we were able to match, and at times out class, the second best team in the league. In the second game the Cobras started to look a little tired and fatigued. The hot weather was starting to have an effect regardless of us having 2 subs, a rare luxury!!! Elliot made some more wonderful saves despite carrying a painful leg injury, but he was unable to keep them all out as Paddock Wood showed their quality. We kept going right to very end and never showed signs of letting our heads drop. We managed to create chances in this game to but just could not put the ball in the net with their goalie making a couple of good saves and the Cobras just not finding that cutting edge in the box.
The opening few minutes of the Vipers game saw Paddock Wood putting early pressure against the us, but we rallied well to show some solid defending. Sam B and Sam S were kept busy but showed lots of determination to break up Paddock Wood attacks. It wasn’t all them though, as Ollie demonstrated when he brought about a good save from their goalie with a solid shot on goal. The pressure showed in the end though, and following on from a corner, the ball wasn’t cleared and they went 1-0 up. The Vipers kept their heads though, and started to play the ball around pretty well, and following a move down the right wing, a cross from Harry L landed at Ollies feet and he tried a cheeky back heel on goal which the goalie wasn’t fooled by. In the 2nd half, and playing downhill, the Vipers were still very much in contention. A corner went to Harry who drove the ball across the face of goal. Ollie tried his best but he couldn’t quite get his head to the ball. Tom E, coming on as sub, had a couple of efforts on goal, a 25 yard strike which the goalie deflected away, and a 2nd attempt from a short corner in a move involving Harry which saw the Paddock Wood goalie quick off the line to take. Paddock Wood were very much on the back foot in the 2nd half, with Vipers keen to get back into the game. Unluckily though, they sprung an attack which ended up with an unstoppable shot from the right side of the penalty box. 2-0. In the last few seconds, Zak made a terrific save to keep the score 2-0 at the final whistle. The Vipers were perhaps a little Unlucky not to get a draw out of the game. A good performance all round against a strong team. The second game started in a similar fashion to the first, with Paddock Wood frequently on the attack, and the Vipers having to show guts and plenty of effort to keep them out… Several corners from them were defended well, and Zak made another great save to frustrate the attacking No 9 when he blocked a low hard shot driven towards him. The first goal came about soon after when a goal kick landed at the feet of their striker who shot straight past Zak. 1-0. Soon after they scored in exactly the same fashion to make it 2-0 and that’s how the 1st half finished. In the second half, for a few minutes the Vipers were still in the game. Ollie had a shot on goal, palmed away by their goalie. Steadily though, Paddock Wood put more pressure on the Vipers and more goals followed. Zak injured himself in goal after valiant attempts to keep the ball out – and he did on many occasions. Take heart Zak, despite the final score would have been more if not for you! I heard several of the Paddock Wood subs talking amongst themselves saying “Their keeper is brilliant…” Sam B replaced Zak, and was immediately in action, but unfortunately the goals kept coming. A bit of a drubbing? Perhaps…But they did had a very talented striker, who scored 4 or 5…However the majority of the goals were “freebies”, with the Vipers giving the ball away too easily in and around the penalty area, and being punished as a result.
Overall, the first games for both teams were really encouraging in that we were able to threaten their goal regularly and create chances. Paddock Wood have hardly lost a game this season so this was credit to the Cobras and Vipers who kept them honest throughout.
Results:
Cobras 0-3 Paddock Wood
Vipers 0-2 Paddock Wood
Cobras 0-4 Paddock Wood
Vipers 0-7 Paddock Wood
Unlucky boys, good effort all round.

10 April 11 - 22:47Saturday 9th April: Cobras and Vipers Vs Pembury
Hi all
The Cobras and Vipers travelled to Pembury on Saturday for their latest game in glorious sunshine! Both teams were short of a few players this week but with Pembury only having one team it meant we could mix the two teams together.
The first game was a strange one. Everything seemed very flat and quiet, maybe it was due to there just being one game on at a time, or just that everyone was enjoying the sun!!! Nevertheless, we were able to dominate the game without being at our best. The first goal settled us down, coming after a neat passage of football and ending up with Taran diverting the ball into the net from close range. Having got in front we looked quite solid at the back, with Fynn making sure that everyone was focussed on the job. We created numerous chances to extend our lead, especially Alfie, who looked to shot from any distance and was very unfortunate not to get on the score sheet. He produced an assist, even if he didn’t mean it, for the second goal. The ball fell to him at the edge of the box and he bundled it through to Toby who slotted the ball into the back of the net with great composure. This was part of a very good day for Toby who held the ball up front and brought other players into the game consistently. We saw the game out with a degree of comfort and secured another valuable three points against a Pembury team who have had some very good results this season.
In the second game we were a bit more open, I tried a few players in different positions and in an unfamiliar formation but this led to us losing our shape. In addition to this, their forward was in top form and I am not sure if any defence or goalkeeper would have stopped him. We were 3-1 down at half time, our goal coming from Ryan who showed again that he is a natural finisher in the box, he deflected an awkward cross brilliantly into the corner of the goal. The second half was terrific to watch, full of excitement. We pushed forward looking to get back into the game and almost managed it. Finding ourselves 4-1 down was a bit of a shock but all the players showed wonderful commitment and attitude, we never dropped our heads and always believed in our ability. It so nearly paid off. Taran started the recovery with a good finish from close range. Ben gave us hope with a fantastic left foot volley from the edge of the area, he showed perfect technique with his weaker foot. Unfortunately we just ran out of time and couldn’t find an equaliser. Regardless, it was another 3 points and a continuation of our good recent form. The second game showed real courage and spirit which was great to see. Good stuff boys, keep it up.
Results:
Cobras 2-0 Pembury (Taran and Toby)
Vipers 3-4 Pembury (Ryan, Taran and Ben)
Thanks,

10 April 11 - 22:44Saturday 9th April: Pythons Vs Langton Green
Hi all
1/ Langton Green V Broad Oak Pythons
The first few minutes of the game saw both teams attacking and defending in equal measures. The Pythons gradually took control of the game. There were several early attempts on goal; Tom took a free kick which just flew above the bar, a shot from TJ which their goalie tipped to the right of the post and a close range attempt by Ollie which bounced away off the goalie. While the Pythons were demonstrating that they could attack, they were also called on to defend…Elliot quick to grab the ball from LG attacks, and Harry showing a willingness and determination to swiftly close down attackers and tackle effectively. The boys started playing some lovely football in this game, with terrific passes and movement. An early move down the right wing saw TJ and Ollie use the ball very well before delivering a low pass across the face of the goal which Tom couldn’t quite reach. The deserved goal came soon after, Will passing through to Ollie who managed to get enough contact on the ball to cause it to trickle past their goalie. In the second half, this teamwork continued. The boys sense of awareness and tactics was fantastic to watch. TJ took a throw in; Will held the ball up nicely before laying off to Tom who shot just wide. Wills efforts were rewarded soon after when receiving the ball from another throw, he controlled the ball at the edge of the box and shot past the goalie, 2-0… Although having the majority of the possession, LG still posed a threat. Harry and Brogan were disciplined to frustrate LG attacks on several occasions both looking very solid. Elliot wasn’t without work to do though; one rasping shot on goal was saved very well.Back at the other end, the Python attacks continued. Tom headed just over from a well lofted corner by Will, and then saw a free kick from 18 yards out rattle the cross bar.In the dying seconds Will had another half chance but the ball just went over the bar. This was a first class display by the boys. They were focused from the start, and showed fantastic teamwork throughout. The passing and movement was the best seen so far. Even the referee mentioned this. Outstanding TEAM performance.
Final Score – Langton Green 0 Pythons 2 (Ollie and Will)
2/ Langton Green V Broad Oak Pythons
The Pythons didn’t start this game with as much energy – and took a few minutes to get going. The weather conditions were clearly effecting both teams with the sun and temperature zapping a little of their energy.Soon though the boys seemed to get their second wind. TJ had an early shot which just flew over the bar…Harry also had an attempt, cleverly receiving the ball from a short corner before firing just wide. Will got on the score sheet again soon after, receiving the ball after a throw in before shooting from 8 yards out…1-0.The pass & move tactics from match 1, certainly continued in this game. Brogan capably cleared from a LG attack, sending the ball through to Tom who fed the ball to Harry who saw another shot end up just wide of the post.2-0 came soon after. Ollie showed a goal poachers attitude, when he followed in on a shot from Tom which the goalie couldn’t keep hold of. Ollie deftly controlled the ball and scored from close quarters.During the second half, the Pythons continued to string passes together very capably, with numerous attempts on goal keeping their Goalie very busy.Perhaps we lost a little composure in the final five minutes, or tiredness kicked in…Maybe there was too much enthusiasm to get on the score sheet! Either way, the team stopped defending as a team in the final minutes, with Brogan and Harry trying to stop desperate attacks by multiple LG players. We got away with it on a couple of occasions but then LG scored. Almost immediately however, the boys seemed to realise they had pushed their luck a little and adjusted their formation to give better strength in defence.
It finished 2-1 to the Pythons.
Another strong performance, with great teamwork and determination by the whole team. Well done.
Final Score – Langton Green 1 Pythons 2 (Ollie and Will)

21 March 11 - 21:57Saturday 19th March: Pythons Vs Paddock Wood
Hi all,
Paul, AJ and James are moving on from Broad Oak. We all wish them well and thank Paul for his invaluable efforts in coaching which has seen the boys develop considerably. To AJ and James, good luck with rugby or football, colourful characters both of you!
1/ Paddock Wood V Broad Oak Pythons
A bruising encounter which saw both teams attacking and defending in relatively equal measures. The game had an even flow to; it making it enjoyable for the spectators. Ollie and Harry saw early attempts on goal saved by the PW goalie who was in good form. The difference between the two teams was the PW No 9. A very capable player, he took two opportunities in the first half making it 2-0 at the break, despite the best efforts of Pythons defenders and Elliot. The second half continued in the same style. The game continued to entertain those on the touchlines with attacking and defending by both teams. PW went 3-0 up in the second half, and this was the final score. At the final whistle, and although defeated, the Pythons could leave the field with their heads held high, for a good team effort…Harry was awarded the Man of the Match for his energetic performance at the back, breaking up numerous attacks. Mention should also be made of the efforts made by Brogan in defence and Elliot in goal – valiant by all!
Final Score:
Paddock Wood 3 Pythons 0
Pythons Man of Match - Harry
2/ Paddock Wood V Broad Oak Pythons
The second game saw the Pythons competing against another strong PW team. I stress competing because it was exactly that. The Pythons went 1-0 down relatively early in the 1st half. If ever there was a game however where the team pulled together and fought back, then this game was it. James and AJ showed determination and controlled aggression to inspire the others into clawing back the initiative. At half time it was still 1-0 to PW but only just.In the second half the combined efforts of the Pythons paid dividends when a good attacking move saw Ollie deliver a neat pass through to Harry who scored from close quarters. At 1-1 the game was in the balance. PW attacked and the Pythons rallied…AJ was all over the pitch, challenging for the ball and displaying a ”never say die performance”.This overall performance was fittingly rewarded with a second goal. The PW goalie took a goal kick which went directly to Ollie. He showed coolness under pressure and drove a low hard shot straight at the goal which flew past the PW goalie. The final few minutes were tense. PW fought back, putting the Pythons under pressure, but they were able to defend successfully, and see the game finish 2-1 to the Pythons.A very enjoyable game to watch, and one which saw the Pythons pull together as a team both attacking and defending. Terrific effort by all the boys. Gutsy win.The man of the match award could have gone to any of the boys; a split decision on the Panel. However, on the day that James and AJ played their last game for Broad Oak, it was fitting that AJ took the award – and deservedly so.
Final Score:
Paddock Wood 1 Pythons 2 (Harry & Ollie)
Man of the Match – AJ
A final comment…Broad Oak has some fantastic teams. They should celebrate sportingly when they win and try to hold their heads high when they are defeated. The Broad Oak philosophy is that the Child comes first, and teamwork and sportsmanship are actively encouraged over and above a result.Players, coaches and parents should all be part of this. Disappointing then to see such a bad attitude displayed by a member of the opposition on this match day. Arguing, swearing and a point blank refusal to shake hands with other players are attributes which fly in the face of what most Teams should tolerate.
In addition to the league games played by the Pythons, the Cobras and Vipers played jointly in two friendlies against Paddock Wood. We lengthened the pitches and played up to 10 a side with the aim of getting some valuable experience of larger pitches and more players with next year in mind. Every player gave their all and showed signs of getting the hang of the full scale game. We matched Paddock Wood in both games, going down narrowly in each. The second game was the better performance with us going down to a strange penalty, I think Harry though he was playing Rugby!!! I thought the stand out player was Sam Sheppard who looked very comfortable and composed throughout. We play Paddock Wood in the league in a few weeks and if we play like that we will do well.

13 March 11 - 23:01Saturday 12th March: Cobras and Vipers Vs Tonbridge
The Cobras Vipers travelled to Tonbridge on Saturday for their latest league fixture. Both teams were back to full strength this week after the illness that depleted us two weeks ago, with the Cobras looking to build upon the confidence building win against Edenbridge.
The Vipers were dealt a blow when Tom Barham couldn’t make the kick off due to unforeseen circumstances!! Charlie switched teams temporarily to give them their full compliment in the first game. The Vipers were constantly on the attack in this game, moving the ball around the pitch and drawing the Tonbridge players out of their positions which created space for us in the attacking areas. As a result of this we were able to create numerous opportunities to shoot at goal with Ollie and Tom B (fresh from the bench) having the best chances. The highlight of the game was a first goal in Broad Oak colours for summer signing Sam Sheppard. He tracked our attack well and arrived perfectly on time as the ball fell at his feet inside the box, he steadied himself and calmly diverted the ball into the net, a well deserved goal for Sam who has worked very hard all season in addition to showing signs of development throughout. It was a shame that Tonbridge were able to get a goal to leave the match level at 1-1 as it was a game we felt we should have won. In the second game the Vipers struggled to find the fluency and spark of the first game and were punished by a stronger Tonbridge team. Nevertheless, Ollie grabbed another wonderful individual goal, beating various players and finishing well, by my reckoning that is 20 goals for Ollie this season, he leads the squads goal scoring charts. Overall the Vipers are starting to pick up points almost every week now, as well as competing in every single game, all players have shown improvement over the season which is encouraging.
The Cobras didn’t start their first game to well against the stronger Tonbridge side, maybe a bit complacent after their win at Edenbridge last time. Their centre forward caused us problems with his pace and power as he scored in the first half. We lifted our game after this and got back into the game with one of the goals of the season. The ball was cleared by a Tonbridge defender and it fell at the feet of Fynn around the half way line, he smashed a first time shot that flew high into the air towards goal. From the moment it left his foot it looked like it was going in, and it sure did, dipping under the bar which prompted his traditional acrobatic celebration!!! Unfortunately Tonbridge were too strong a got a second goal, the third goal late on was harsh on us. In the second game we played much better collectively. The whole of the second half was us attacking, our defenders stole the ball back with ease and set up numerous attacking opportunities but the ball just wouldn’t go in. Ryan had a shot that just went wide, Charlie had an effort flash by the post and Alfie got in a lot of good positions. The best chance to win the game was from a penalty given for hand ball, I had no hesitation in giving it to Ben, but he put it narrowly wide. Ben is very strong mentally and I know he won’t let this affect him. It was a game we totally dominated and should have won, but the performance was very encouraging and it’s another point for us.
Results:
Cobras 1-3 Tonbridge (Fynn)
Vipers 1-1 Tonbridge (Sam S)
Cobras 0-0 Tonbridge
Vipers 1-4 Tonbridge (Ollie)
Well done boys,

13 March 11 - 22:59Saturday 12th March: Pythons Vs Hailsham
1/ Broad Oak Pythons V Hailsham Colts
Match Report by Paul Evans
This was a combative match throughout, with both teams trying to gain control and dominate from the midfield. Hailsham achieved this more in the first half; they were more determined and focused. The Pythons didn’t play the game as fluidly as they can and their passing wasn’t great. Hailsham took the lead in the first half and we were fortunate that Elliott was in fine form as he stopped numerous Hailsham attacks. In the second half the Pythons came out showing a little more grit. Although playing uphill, they picked up the pace more. Unfortunately they went a second goal down – possibly as a result of not defending as a team as keenly as they do on the attack…With about five minutes to go the Pythons were awarded a free kick just outside the Hailsham box. TJ stepped up and rifled an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. This sparked the Pythons into a final burst of energy; but they couldn’t quite draw level.
Final Score:
Pythons 1 (TJ) – Hailsham 2
Pythons Man of Match - Elliott
2/ Broad Oak Pythons V Hailsham 2
The Pythons were much more capable in this game. Their heads were up from the outset, and the passing slicker and more accurate. Perhaps annoyed with themselves from the first game, the boys seemed to want to make up for that result by stepping up a couple of gears. The teamwork showed in this game, with positive attacking moves down the flanks and through the middle – but remember (AGAIN!!) to get back and defend if the opposition are attacking and bearing down on goal…The wave of Python attacks eventually resulted in a goal, when a TJ shot managed to scrape its way over the goal line.In the second half, the pressure continued. It was generally the Pythons threatening to score again, but when Hailsham did break on the counter attack, more effective defending was displayed. Brogan did very well in frustrating these Hailsham attacks, intervening on several occasions before feeding the ball on.The Pythons went two up with a shotl from Tom from six yards out. That’s the way it finished. A much better performance by the team and a deserved win.
Final Score:
Pythons 2 (TJ & Tom) – Hailsham 0
Man of Match – Brogan

27 February 11 - 23:49Saturday 26th February: Cobras and Vipers Vs Pythons and Edenbridge
Hi all,
On Saturday all three of our teams travelled to Edenbridge for a keenly contested set of league fixtures. All of our teams were down to the bare bones with the Cobras without Charlie (illness), the Vipers without Taran (illness) and the Pythons without Elliot (unavailable). Nevertheless we all soldiered on what was always going to be a strange match day with our own teams playing each other.
First up the Pythons faced the Cobras. Perhaps the Pythons thought that the opposition were the underdogs in this fixture; if so, nobody appeared to have told the Cobras! They displayed great resilience and determination in this match, showing great teamwork to frustrate the Pythons who had the majority of the attacking play. Matt Smith excelled in goal, saving many shots from the Pythons. He had Fynn in front as centre back, who brought many attacking moves to a grinding halt with very positive tackles. The Pythons themselves were unable to make the most of the possession in the first half; despite many attempts on goal the ball was destined not to cross the line. The Cobras had their attacking moments too, with numerous moves punching through the defence of the Pythons not quite rewarded with a goal. In the second half a goal eventually came for the Pythons when TJ skipped past a couple of the Cobras showing excellent close ball control, before slotting the ball into the net from five yards out. This match continued to be a very even affair up until the final whistle with the fixture being decided by the single goal. A very enjoyable match to watch from the sidelines. The Cobras worked determinedly throughout, defending strongly and picking their moments to break forwards and counter attack. The Pythons should reflect positively on the way that they kept going, grinding out a win.
Second up for the Pythons were the Vipers. This game had both teams with just five outfield players which possibly made for the game to be more open from the start. The Pythons appeared to start more quickly than the Vipers, perhaps acting on feedback from the coach! Within a couple of minutes, TJ scored from six yards out. This was soon followed by AJ getting on the score sheet with a goal from an almost impossible angle out towards the corner flag. Toby was doing his best in goal for the Vipers, and had perhaps started to settle into the role when the Pythons scored again. This third goal was worthy of a TV replay, a clearance from Toby left him some distance from the goal as the ball ended up at TJ’s feet…A quick look and then a lofted shot from about eighteen yards out left Toby with no chance. At about this time the Pythons appeared to become a little complacent. A breakdown in communications immediately after a goal kick allowed Ollie in on goal. The Pythons know how sharp Ollie can be, and he took his chance well. 3-1. TJ scored once more just before half time, with a shot that bounced in off Tobys arm. In the second half The Pythons continued to have the majority of possession. Further goals followed by Harry, after a piercing break through the centre, and James with a deft touch from the right side of the penalty area. The moment of the day however was definitely one to remember. Harry went to control a lofted ball from AJ in goal, and about fifteen yards out. Ollie clearly had not read the script and was still challenging for everything. A bone crunching tackle followed, Ollie won the ball, took a couple of steps and then thumped the ball into the roof of the net leaving AJ with no chance. Another good game, exciting to watch, with lots of thrills and spills. Well done to the Vipers for a good game, especially to Toby and Zak who had played in goal for a half each, and were on the end of a bit of a battering who both made good saves. Pythons - good goals and attacking moves, but occasionally there is still the temptation to forget what your allocated position is, and the team to suddenly have six centre forwards!
Prior to this game the Vipers played out a very tight game against Edenbridge. It was a very tight and tense game with the Vipers keeping their defensive shape well and denying the opposition a clear sight of their goal. The pitches were starting to get a bit boggy at this stage which didn’t help the likes of Ollie and Tom B with their stylish dribbling styles. Regardless, the whole team excelled themselves even without their talisman Taran in the midfield. Unfortunately we just couldn’t take our chances in this game, and found the Edenbridge goalkeeper in top form. Had we taken one of chances, especially in the first half, the Vipers would surely have gone onto win this game against an opposition which we generally outperformed. The spirit that all the Vipers showed should be applauded, never once did their heads drop or their commitment levels diminish which will certainly be key in the remaining games of the season.
The Cobras second game was against Edenbridge and what a game it was. I wanted the players to transfer the effort and skill they had shown against the Pythons earlier and they did this and more. The first half was a bit scrappy but Edenbridge never looked like scoring and we looked quite threatening every time we went forward. Alfie created the best chance with a wonderful run through 3 defenders but we just couldn’t find the finish. The second half was wide open with Edenbridge pushing more players forward but we kept our discipline fantastically which was important. We discussed keeping our shape at Thursday training and the boys put this into practice diligently. The only goal of the game came part way into the second half when Dylan picked up the ball in the centre circle, he got it under control and got his head up. He decided to take on two Edenbridge defenders and beat them with a superb piece of individual skill, moving the ball between his left and right feet and sneaking through a small gap, he was through on goal... he moved the ball onto his stronger right foot and moved into a shooting position and curled an accurate shot into the corner to the delight of myself and all the parents, what a goal!!! We then defended the lead with great maturity, even if there were a few scary moments!!! Every player deserves a mention here... Matt was awesome in goal, making key saves and never spilling the ball. My defensive three worked well as a unit, led by inspirational captain Fynn along with Ben playing from the left side and continually clearing things up and making keys interceptions in addition to Harry P working hard up and down the right side, never losing a tackle. My two midfielders worked tirelessly to help attack and defend, Alfie kept the ball well when he got it as well as passing it efficiently. Dylan grabbed the limelight with his goal but his work rate was top class as well. Ryan worked hard to hold up the ball up front and bring other players into the game, he had some powerful shots which went just wide. A great victory, well done boys!
Results:
Pythons 1-0 Cobras (TJ)
Vipers 0-2 Edenbridge
Vipers 2-6 (Ollie 2: TJ 3, AJ, James, Harry L)
Cobras 1-0 (Dylan)
Good stuff from all the boys this week.

14 February 11 - 20:05Saturday 12th February: Pythons Vs Tonbridge
The Pythons travelled to Tonbridge for their latest league game on Saturday without their influential left winger Tom Evans. With the Cobras and Vipers game versus Paddock Wood called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Horam the Pythons could call up Fynn on his birthday as well as Alfie to the team. Conditions were remarkably good bearing in mind the poor weather in the build up to the game, the pitches at Tonbridge were in pristine condition.
Things could not have started much better in the first game, Harry L picked up the ball on the left almost straight from the kick off and arrowed his way towards goal, ghosting past a couple of players and slotting the ball into the corner of the goal, another typical solo effort from the inspirational ‘Ladders’. Up until half time we absolutely dominated the game in all areas and should have been 5 or 6 goals up, but we seemed to have lost our shooting boots!!! We seemed to have got the game won though when Will smashed in a wonderful shot from well outside the box to make it 2-0. The shot was destined to go in as soon as it left his boot, what wonderful poise and technique. After this we lost our composure and shape unfortunately and conceded two late goals. It was a lesson in not getting over confident when leading a game because you will be punished. Our defensive midfield players got a bit carried away and stopped protecting our defence. In the second game we looked much more solid at the back, Fynn had settled down and started playing at his very best. He over-powered their forwards to win the ball back high up the pitch and start attacks for the rest of the team. His excellent overall performance led to him being awarded the man of the match. The crucial winning goal came in the second half from Harry L again. Another weaving run saw him glide into the box and power home a right footed shot. This time we held onto the lead and never really looked threatened. Overall it was a weekend where we were never really at our most fluent best and it is a credit to the boys that we still managed to get 4 points even if we are a little disappointed to get all 6!!!
Results:
Pythons 2-2 Tonbridge (Scorers: Harry L, Will. Man of the Match: Harry L)
